The organization Fido Alliance has developed a proposal for a new standard for passkeys — i.e., alternatives to passwords such as hardware keys, facial recognition, fingerprints or PIN codes.

The big news in the proposal is that it will be possible to use the same passkeys even if you change platform or service, something that would make it significantly easier for users than at present.

The login credentials will be transferred using the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP) and the Credential Exchange Format (CXF), which means, among other things, that they are encrypted all the way.

Considering that companies like 1Password, Apple, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Enpass, Google, Microsoft, NordPass, Okta, Samsung, and SK Telecom are members of the Fido Alliance, we can probably expect that there is a decent chance that the proposal will become a reality in the near future.
