Buy Low, Sell High (RPMs)

Hey there 👋,

In this week’s Alts by Flippa newsletter I discuss:

  • Display ad revenue arbitrage?
  • Domain name pricing
  • Odd NFT action

Every heading is a discussion channel in the Alts by Flippa discord community – come join over 1750 of us.

Dom Wells of Onfolio tweeted that with display ad revenue (RPM) currently suppressed (due to macro economic factors), this could be a great to to buy up content sites to catch the bounce when things recover:

Looking at the Ezoic Online Ad Revenue Index it does appear that revenue has been trending down since the peak at the end of last year:

The index is down from a high of 83 in Nov 21 to its current 48, but interestingly is actually at the same level as back in Nov 19, pre pandemic.

Tyler Bishop, the CMO of Ezoic, responded to the thread saying that when the economy bounces back, advertising follows quickly:

So with multiples stalling, this could indeed be a solid kind of arbitrage strategy, to buy now and flip later.

The Handshake .e/ TLD sold last week at Namescon last week for 5M $HNS which was $300K USD.

This was reportedly the highest sale in HNS to date (read E is for envisioning on The Shake), but the biggest sale in USD is still .s/ for $750K USD, bought by the Namecheap CEO Richard Kirkendall.

And in other news, Andrew Allemann did a podcast with interviews at Namescon where he spoke with a contact at Godaddy about them testing pricing on 4 figure domains ending in 111, i.e. $2,111 vs $1,999 – it’s too early for conclusive data, but it does look as if there is a 10% increase in conversion by doing so.

I wonder if we’ll see people doing this on Flippa…

I sold my Moonbird a couple months ago and had not bought anything since.

But then I saw something happening with Moonbirds Oddities a few days ago:

Now that Oddities are able to be burned next year for the Moonbirds Mythics expansion project (20K birds), I really think that at 10% of a Moonbird they are undervalued in the same way Mutants were to Bored Apes, this time last summer.

And I’m not the only one, as a month ago website & NFT flipper BowTiedWookie spotted this same opportunity:

So now I’m this friendly critter as my PFP on Twitter:

Shame he’s going to get sacrificed (burned) to the Odd God next year:

This is part of the new lore / storytelling that co-founder Justin Mezzell announced at the Future Proof event a week ago. The video below is a brief recap:

The floor price of Moonbirds has been hammered since I got out at 23ETH (currently 11.5ETH) and I’ve thrown my fair share of shade over what I thought were mistakes and bad decisions by the team.

But I now think that Kevin Rose and Justin have learned from this, and these could be good entry prices right now – if ETH doesn’t tank again following Bitcoin’s recent lead.

Likewise on the crypto front, this could be a good time to be dollar cost averaging. However, I’m still not putting any fiat back into crypto yet, my psychology is happy to continue to sit out.

And finally, I’ll finish with an inspiring tweet by Shane Cultra on how quickly it took him to make 7 figures from all of the webs:
